The original aim of the Braughing Housing Association was to provide affordable accommodation for the elderly single people of Braughing in need of a home. Money-raising for building housing accommodation started in October 1963. Land for the buildings was kindly donated by Mrs Stuart-Williams and a loan was awarded by Braughing Rural District Council.
Braughing Housing Association Limited, was registered on 25 Nov 1963 and established as a non-profit organisation under the Industrial and Provident Societies Act, 1965. It is now a Registered Society under the Co-operative and Community Benefit Societies Act, 2014.
Orchard House, consisting of six single-storey flatlets and a communal lounge, was built on The Street opposite the entrance to Green Lane, and residents moved in during March 1965.
Each flatlet is self-contained with its own kitchen, hallway, bathroom and bed/sitting room, and is suitable for single tenancies only. Unfortunately, none can be easily adapted for wheelchairs. The communal lounge was little used and was converted into a seventh home for many years before being re-converted in 2017 into a separate bedroom for the adjacent home.

Homes occasionally become vacant. If you wish to apply for a tenancy, in the first instance please email us and tell us a little about yourself, including where you are living now, and we will send you an application form. Priority is given to Braughing residents, and parents of residents.
Braughing Housing Association is a registered provider of housing and is managed by a small number of unpaid volunteer directors. It must provide information to both the Regulator for Social Housing and the Housing Ombudsman. It must publish a number of reports on its website for residents. They can be seen in the policies and documents section.
